Overview
Pastel harbor, turquoise coves
Curaçao is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, about 65 km north of Venezuela and around 80 km southeast of Aruba. Its capital, Willemstad, is famous for the pastel facades along Sint Anna Bay and its pontoon bridge.
The "Historic Area of Willemstad, Inner City and Harbour" was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, covering the historic quarters of Punda, Otrobanda, Scharloo and Pietermaai. The harbor itself is a busy working port, so charters usually begin elsewhere.
Most of the island's beaches lie on the calm south (leeward) coast; the north coast is rough, with a steep drop-off close to shore. East of Willemstad, the lagoon of Spanish Water, with its bays and islets, is the main base for charter and sportfishing boats. From here, cruises head along the southeast coast inside the Curaçao Marine Park, or out to Klein Curaçao.

Where you'll cruise
Reefs, wrecks and turtles

Curaçao Marine Park
Established in 1983, the park runs about 21.7 km from Jan Thiel to Oostpunt, extending up to 100 m offshore, with a mooring buoy system and patrols against illegal anchoring and fishing.
The Tugboat
A small sunken tug in about 5 m of water, close enough to the surface for snorkelers. Currents can be strong in the bay's southeast corner.
Playa Lagun
A narrow cove between rocky cliffs, known for sea turtles, especially early in the morning.
Playa Grandi & Grote Knip
Beaches at the west end of the island, with turtles often reported at Playa Grandi.
Blue Bay
A sheltered sandy bay with a shallow fringing reef.
Klein Curaçao
A full day to the little island
Klein Curaçao is a small, uninhabited island off Curaçao's southeast point, with white sand, a historic lighthouse and shipwrecks on its windward shore. It has been a Ramsar wetland of international importance since 2018, and sea turtles nest on its beaches.
It is not a short hop. The crossing is in open sea, the outbound leg is often rough and seasickness is common, while the return is usually calmer. Trips start early and take the whole day, and they depend on the weather, so flexible dates help.

Seasons
Weather in Curaçao
Climate: semi-arid, with trade winds year-round and a short wet season, roughly October to December.
Hurricanes: Curaçao lies near the southern edge of the hurricane belt and landfalls are rare, but storms can still bring heavy rain and rough seas, as Tropical Storm Tomas did in November 2010. The Atlantic season runs from June 1 to November 30.
Island hopping
Aruba and Bonaire
Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao are separate islands and separate charter markets, so they are not combined on a day charter. See our Aruba guide if you are visiting both.

Curaçao FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions About Yacht Charters in Curaçao
Straight answers to the questions travelers ask most about chartering in Curaçao. If yours is not here, ask us when you request a quote.
Where do Curaçao charters leave from?
Mostly from the marinas of Spanish Water and the Caracas Bay area, east of Willemstad, depending on the vessel.
How long is the boat ride to Klein Curaçao?
It varies with the boat and the sea state, and published estimates differ widely. The outbound crossing is in open sea and often rough, so plan on a full day.
Is Klein Curaçao inhabited?
No. It is uninhabited, with basic shelters for day visitors and a historic lighthouse, and it is a protected Ramsar wetland.
Can we swim with turtles in Curaçao?
Turtles are often seen at Playa Lagun, Playa Grandi and Klein Curaçao, but encounters are never guaranteed.
What is the Tugboat?
A small, shallow wreck at Caracas Bay, popular with snorkelers because it lies close to the surface.
Is there a marine park in Curaçao?
Yes. The Curaçao Marine Park, managed by CARMABI, runs from Jan Thiel to Oostpunt, with mooring buoys and patrols against illegal anchoring.
Does Curaçao get hurricanes?
Curaçao lies near the edge of the hurricane belt and landfalls are rare, though tropical storms can bring heavy rain and flooding.
Can we visit Aruba or Bonaire on a day charter?
No. Aruba lies around 80 km to the northwest and Bonaire to the east; both are separate islands and are treated as separate destinations.
Is Willemstad a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
Yes. The Historic Area of Willemstad, Inner City and Harbour was inscribed in 1997, covering Punda, Otrobanda, Scharloo and Pietermaai. Because the harbor is a busy working port, charters usually begin east of the city at Spanish Water or Caracas Bay.
What is the weather like for a charter in Curaçao?
Curaçao is semi-arid, with trade winds year-round and a short wet season, roughly October to December. Most beaches lie on the calm south, or leeward, coast, while the north coast is rough, with a steep drop-off close to shore.
Can a charter take us to the west coast beaches near Westpunt?
Usually as a separate trip. Beach-hopping and turtle-snorkel boat tours along the west coast, where Playa Lagun, Playa Grandi and Grote Knip lie, are offered separately from cruises out of Spanish Water. Turtle sightings are never guaranteed.
