Overview
A harbor city on the Pacific
San Diego Bay is a natural deep-water harbor about 12 miles long, sheltered by the Silver Strand and Coronado to the west. It is home to major U.S. Navy bases, a busy waterfront and the man-made peninsulas of Shelter Island and Harbor Island, lined with marinas.
A bay charter takes in the downtown skyline and the San Diego–Coronado Bridge, Navy ships and aircraft carriers, and the views back toward the city from Point Loma. At the southern tip of Point Loma, Cabrillo National Monument overlooks the ocean route of the gray whale migration.
North of downtown, Mission Bay is a separate city aquatic park with calm water, beaches and zones reserved for different activities, making it a relaxed alternative to the working harbor.
San Diego is a cool-water destination: lovely for cruising, sailing and sunsets, but not a tropical snorkeling market. Sea temperatures range from around 59 °F in winter to the low 70s °F in late summer.

Licensed charters
How legal bay charters work
Since 2021, passenger charters on San Diego Bay must display a Port of San Diego charter vessel decal and operate from a Port tenant marina or landing, not from public launch ramps, guest docks or dinghy docks. They also need a U.S. Coast Guard-licensed captain, the appropriate Coast Guard certification and commercial insurance. The Port publishes its decal list so you can check.
U.S. Coast Guard rules also shape group size: smaller uninspected vessels carry no more than six paying passengers, and larger groups need an inspected vessel certificated for that number. We only suggest properly licensed boats that fit your group.
Seasons
Summer and early fall bring the warmest water and the clearest afternoons, though "May Gray" and "June Gloom" can keep mornings overcast at the coast.
Winter is the rainy season, mostly December to March, and the heart of gray whale season.
Santa Ana winds occasionally blow from fall to spring.
