Overview
The other end of the Tourist Corridor
San José del Cabo is the municipal seat of Los Cabos: a historic town with a mission dating from the 1730s, an art district and a slower pace than Cabo San Lucas, about 33 km away along the Tourist Corridor.
For charter guests, the big practical advantage is location. Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) is about 10 km north of town, and many resorts at this end of the corridor are closer to San José than to the Cabo San Lucas harbor. Boats here are based at Puerto Los Cabos, a modern marina in the La Playa / La Playita area just east of the historic center.
San José del Cabo is best known on the water for sport fishing. The offshore banks east of the marina, including the well-known Gordo Banks, are a short run from the harbor, and a local fleet of pangas and sportfishing boats is based at the marina. Coastal cruises, whale-season trips and private celebrations are also possible, depending on the vessels based at the marina on your date.
One thing to know before you book: El Arco and Land's End are at the opposite end of the cape. Many Arch, snorkel and sunset charters depart from Cabo San Lucas, so if Land's End is the priority we may recommend starting there, even if you are staying near San José.
What fits from here
Charters that suit San José del Cabo
Sport fishing
The clearest match for this side of Los Cabos. Operators fish the banks a short run from Puerto Los Cabos, with species changing through the seasons. Fishing charters use dedicated sportfishing boats.
SignatureWhale season
San José del Cabo is included in Mexico's official whale-watching areas for Los Cabos. Trips run in the winter season on authorized vessels only, following national whale-watching rules.
SeasonalCoastal cruising
Cruise west toward Palmilla and the corridor bays, where calmer water is found on the Sea of Cortez side. We confirm the route and any swim stops with the captain.
Celebrations
Anniversaries, birthdays and family gatherings close to the resorts at this end of the corridor, depending on the vessels based at the marina.
Land's End by arrangement
If you want El Arco, Lover's Beach and the sea lions, we will compare a long cruise from San José with a shorter trip from the Cabo San Lucas marina.

Most catamaran products in Los Cabos are based in Cabo San Lucas. See our Cabo catamaran guide for the options.

On the water
Fishing banks, whale season and a protected estuary
The offshore banks. Gordo Banks and neighboring grounds lie offshore from Puerto Los Cabos and are the reason many anglers base themselves here. Exact distances depend on which bank the captain chooses and the day's reports.
Whale season. The official 2025–26 season for Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo ran from December 15 to April 30. Dates are set each year, sightings vary, and swimming with whales is not permitted.
The Estero de San José. Beside the town, the estuary is a protected freshwater wetland and part of a Ramsar-listed river system known for its birdlife. It is explored on foot or by kayak, not by charter yacht.
Cabo Pulmo. The national park up the East Cape is about two hours from San José del Cabo and is usually visited by road rather than as a day charter.
Planning
Choosing where to depart
The right marina depends on the experience you want and where you are staying. As a rule of thumb, fishing and whale-season trips work well from Puerto Los Cabos, while Land's End, Lover's Beach and sunset cruising past El Arco are usually simplest from Cabo San Lucas.
Because not every vessel departs from the same marina, we confirm the meeting point, timing and inclusions for the boat you choose, and we can suggest transport between your hotel and the dock.
